I just had some work done on our 2005 Pilot EXL; for timing belt kit including water pump, reseal of the oil pump that included dropping down the exhaust and oil pan, replacement of both valve cover gaskets (kit), thermostat and coolant replacement, VTM fluid replacement, spark plugs replacement, paid total 1,270.
Here is a GREAT YouTube Video showing a mechanic adjusting the valves on a 2017 Pilot. At or around the 12:20 mark in the video he shows the torque value for the lock nut. The spool is seal with Honda bond, so this does take some effort. Slide the old spool off the rocker arm assembly. Clean old Honda bond off the head.Having your engine make a loud tapping or clicking noise when starting up or experiencing engine power loss are signs that your valve lash needs to be adjusted. Engine won’t rev up to red line, bogs down. Having difficulty starting the engine when it’s hot can also indicate that the valves need to be adjusted.
Dec 28, 2012 · Rev the motor and if the noise goes away at a specific rpm, then it's the tensioner. Run some cleaner through the motor to clean up the valves. Something like Seafoam, BG Engine flush, or even some ATF in the oil will clear out the oil passage. Get a valve lash adjustment. 2006 Pilot 2WD 125K.

All the intake valves were a bit loose at .010 to .011 so I tightened them up to around .008.

The actuator should be out of alignment from the mounting holes approx. 1/8" inch. The hazard with valves too tight is the valve may not fully close, which can overheat it if it gets bad enough (and it's sometimes too late to correct when the symptoms make themselves apparent, without major engine work). From that perspective, I think it's important to at least check the valve adjustment.
