The price action going on in the futures market can generally lead to the movement in the ETF. If ES goes up 1%, it's assumed that SPY when it starts trading that it will open ~1%. Six days a week, and SPY doesn't. You really should just trade ES if you are going long. I use the micros which are 1/10 of minis.

Yes it would be easy to trade spy, I’d try paper trading at first, by "paper trading" in your scenario if use $10 or something for 1-3 months. In that time watch the charts for patterns. If you at least break even, then consider the odds of making a couple hundred a day (on average of course), doable with your levels of capital.
