History and Location. Smith Lake, also known as Lewis Smith Lake, was created in 1961 with the construction of the Lewis Smith Dam. The dam was built for hydroelectric power generation and flood control purposes. It is named after Lewis M. Smith, an executive of Alabama Power Company.

Review of Lewis-Smith Lake & Dam. Reviewed May 21, 2008. I grew up on this lake and moved away to Birmingham. Which is about 45 minutes away. I still have a place there and will never sell it. There are many places you can rent to stay in and they are very reasonable.
