Short answer- no. You can manage without 4x4/awd. However, you'll need to exercise caution and common sense off-pavement and know the limits of the vehicle. If a new hybrid rav4 is $35k and lasts 200k+ miles, 5k for that car is ok if you need a car today and have a backup car, because all the surprise mechanical issues will emerges towards the end of a cars life.
