I have a complete 351C that I want to stroke. I want to use a crank out of a 400. I want to reuse my 5.78" Cleveland rods. I realize I would need to have the mains turned down to 2.75. A 400M crank used to be the hot set up to build a 408. Now you can buy a new cqst SCAT or Eagle 408 crank for less than the price of modifying a spent junkyard crank. I talked to a shop about taking a 351C crank, cutting the mains to fit a 302 and offset grinding the rod journals .100 to make a 3.6 stroke crank.400 Crank into a 351C Block. The 351M/400 blocks are taller than the 351C, so if the 351C brackets mount to the heads and block, they will not work on a 351M/400, because the distance between the heads and block mounting holes is longer in the 351M/400, than it is in the 351C. And when you consider using one of the readily available stroker cranks for the 351 (or even the 302) Fords, there's no reason to use the harder-to-package 400M engine.

After M-block production ended in 1982, Ford re-engineered the M-block flywheel to accommodate both engines with one part. The current M-block flywheel service part (E5TZ-6375-H) has holes drilled and tapped for both 351M and 400 pressure plates. When the 351M was introduced in 1975, it used the same flexplate as the 400.

I was in the scrape yard looking for a damper and found a 400M from a 79 truck and bought it for $150. It actually runs. The only way to tell a 351M from a 400 is to pull the head and measure the stroke, or pull the oil pan and reference the crank number.
